Shakespeare’s Sister-Stay

Posted on October 31, 2010

OK I know it’s probably not considered cool but I was watching the X Factor last night and Cher performed a song called Stay which I could not for the life of me remember who had done the original version. I was coming up with all sorts of names, Scissor Sisters, Twisted Sister and then in the end I had to give up and search for it on YouTube. Two reasons really, first I wanted to know who the hell had done it and secondly I really like the record and incidentally thought Cher’s cover was pretty damn good, she has turned me into a fan anyway.

So the answer to the first question is that it was Shakespeare’s Sister and unlike I thought the record is called ‘Stay’ not ‘Stay with Me’ as I had originally thought. It was released in 1992 and was the UK number 1 for 8 weeks, which is up there amongst the UK’s longest running number 1 hits. It also made number 4 in the States which as we all know is pretty good for a record coming from a UK band; especially an all female one.

Shakesphere’s Sister the band was made up of Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit. It was Marcella Detroit who did the lead vocals on this track which was a little unusual. The video for the song won a Brit Award for best video in 1993, so all in all it has pretty good pedigree and was a great choice for a talent show.

The album The Best of Shakespear’s Sister lists the track from the video at number 7 on the play list.

The Best of MPeople Featuring Heather Small

Posted on August 29, 2010

One of my favorite bands of all time and my two favorite albums by MPeople are Bizarre Fruit and Fresco

I saw MPeople live a few years ago which was well after their heyday years and supposedly in the twilight of their performing years. It was the most amazing concert I have been to. You know you are in the presence of true quality when the live performance is actually better than the recorded albums, especially when those albums are pretty damn good.

Heather Small has a voice that you recognise immediately, it is completely unique and distinctive. I wrote an article about the band called MPeople Featuring Heather Small which goes into a lot more detail about the band, the concert and the music. If you like this remix, you may want to go and take a look, I think it will be worth it.

Their UK tour is finished for the moment, but I don’t think for a second that the band are, even though they had their best years in the 90’s they are still a force to be reckoned with. The fact is true quality lasts and that is why Heather Small and MPeople keep bubbling back up, and I mean that literally. Because if you ever wanted some feel good music fit for the best parties ever, this is it.

Actually it has just been announced that Heather will be joining the Here Come the Girls Tour in November and December this year. Might be worth finding out a little bit more about that.
