Empire State of Mind Video, Featuring Jay-Z and Alicia Keys

Posted on May 13, 2010

While we are on the subject of gangster rapper with pretty girl singer, then it doesn’t get much better than the Empire State of the Mind Video by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. Well I guess any of the Black Eyed Peas releases might compete, personally I think they invented it.

But with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys you have a great combo of a really cool dude doing his ‘ting’ (excuse me I get carried away sometimes and think I am young again) and a brilliant female artist who can really belt out a tune. Personally I think you can draw comparisons between Alicia Keys and Whitney Houston, perhaps not when Whitney was in her prime, but Alicia isn’t half bad and pretty good looking to.

Both Jay-Z and Alicia Keys are native New Yorkers so it is perhaps appropriate that they got together to release this single which was the 3rd single released from Jay-Z’s album The BluePrint 3, his 11th studio album.

There is a ten minute version of Jay-Z and Alicia doing the tune on YouTube if you want an extended version but I have embedded the most viewed version below for your entertainment which is a tad shorter at just over 4 minutes and has been done in black and white. I personally think it makes the video a little bit more interesting, but I guess its down to personal preference.

The album held 5 number 1 spots, 3 in the USA, 1 in Canada and 1 in the UK. The single didn’t quite match that but did get 3 number 1 spots in the USA, number 3 in Canada and 2 number 2 spots in the UK. Not too shabby and I am pretty sure Professor Green and Lilly Allen are not going to be able to match that.

I guess only time will tell but my vote definitely goes to Empire State of Mind, that was class.
