Morning Mood from Peer Gynt Suite 1 by Edvard Grieg

It was thought about time that some culture was brought into play on this music for me blog. So here it is in classical music format. Morning Mood, from Peer Gynt Suite 1, was written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and was first aired in 1876 having been written in 1875. Included here for very personal reasons I will not go into, it is a beautiful piece of music that will now remain in my memory forever and has been published here for posterity’s sake.

The music conjures up a feeling of peace and serenity more so than perhaps any other classical music piece you will find. As usual there are bound to be people that disagree and will sight other preferred alternatives. But as in most things in life, beauty is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder and for me this wonderful musical classic will take some beating.

So why add a classical section to what is essentially a pop and rock music blog. Well the more you listen to classical music the more you will notice connections to the contemporary sounds of today. An odd little snippet here and another one there that sounds just like a little bit of your latest preferred pop song. Like any kind of development, including musical development, much of it draws on original building blocks and traditional solutions used in the past. Yes of course there is the occasional and radical shift in direction that leaves all that was behind, but the vast majority of new developments are incremental versions of previous approaches and techniques. Music is no different, it draws on historical roots, covers from the 60’s and 70’s for a new generation that hadn’t previously heard the original or dare I say it again, snippets from classical music taken from even further back in our history.

Anyway that’s it, I am getting off the soapbox now, and if one person finds and enjoys this piece of music that would never have considered listening to it before then that is a job done. Music is music at the end of the day, and if it changes your mood, hopefully in a positive way, and makes you feel, relaxed, energised, better or uplifted, then just listen to it, enjoy it and let it wash over you. No matter what the genre.
